Checking Your Own Report Hurts Your Score

Some lenders will tell you that if you access your credit report too often --even just to clean it up --, it looks unfavorable to lenders. This is a pervasive and destructive myth that prevents you from being aware when your three digit FICO score is sliding.

If you check your own credit report it is noted as a soft inquiry and it does not result in a negative comment on your report.  According to the Fair Credit Act of 2003 you are able to check your credit from each of the three main bureaus at least once a year and for free!

Fair Isaac understands your need to review your own date, which is why the FICO formula ignores any inquiries generated when you check your own reports and score.

You only get into trouble if you ask a lender to check your score! When you ask a lender to pull your credit (someone who is not you) it generates what is known as a hard inquiry, which definitely hurts your score.

Also as long as you order from a credit bureau or a service that is affiliated with a bureau such as myfico.com your inquiries won’t hurt your credit worthiness.
