Tips for Applying for a Business Credit Card Online

Growing a small business on your own or with someone else will take a lot of hard work and even more determination.  Taking what seemed like a distant dream and transforming it into reality requires a great deal of effort, time, and money.  Some of that money can come in the form of business credit cards that can be used for expenses, inventory, and can help keep your bookkeeping streamlined and bills in order.

As with any credit card, there are two main ways of applying.  Through the mail and online.  The problem with applying through the mail is you usually have to wait for a good offer to come to you, fill out the paperwork, and send it back in.  But what are the chances of the exact offer you want coming by?  Credit card companies these days have so many different types of credit cards to offer, it isn’t likely that you would ever get to examine all of them if you waited for the mailman to stop by.  Instead, online application is the way to go.

The most important part about online application is to do all the right research before you fill out anything.  You need to know which cards offer what incentives, how they can benefit you, what the fees, interest rates, and other charges are, and in general, which card best fits with your business.  For example, if one card offers a great points program but has an extremely high APR, several fees, and you don’t see any good ways to utilize the redeemable items with the points, then that card is of no use to you.  Try to narrow down the types of cards you want in terms of rewards, rates, and other possible incentives, this way you will not find yourself looking at every business card out there.

Reading the fine print is exactly what you need to do when you find a card that might be what you are looking for.  Once you have narrowed down your field of credit cards, you can look at each one individually and start making comparisons.  The fine print can have the little details that set one card apart from another.  If you find a good airline miles card that has all the same features as another, but then realize one has a higher APR, there is the tiebreaker right there.  Or perhaps two cards are almost exactly the same but you find out one card requires you to be more liable if it is lost or stolen, whereas the other does not.  Again, you have just found out which card is the better deal.

Try haggling.  If you have a good personal credit history, as that is what will be used when applying for a new card (they want to make sure you are a good financial investment), and you find one card that seems to have an edge over another and would be perfect if only the APR was down a little more.  You could try calling the company and requesting a lower APR.  Generally people with good credit history will get what they want.  This is a little known secret in the credit world – ask and you might receive.  Remember, the credit companies want your business and you can always go somewhere else if they fail to meet your needs.

You are in charge of your business credit card; get it right the first time and get your business rolling!
