Picture ID Credit Cards

You keep your credit card in your wallet at all times, but one day you happen to be on a busy street and someone bumps into you.  Just like that, your credit card is gone.  The next thing you know, your bill is in the mail with a list of charges that make you wince.  But you signed the back of your card and everything – how is it possible the person who stole your credit card was able to buy all this stuff?  Sadly, signatures can be forged.  But what about a signature couple with a picture?

Fraud monitoring is on the rise. You can clearly see that in the numerous commercials boasting about zero liability and double checking any strange purchases.  Credit card companies are constantly coming up with newer and better ways of keeping their customers free of thieves who would abuse their credit cards.  The newest move is the credit card that has picture identification.

Not only is your card proven to be yours with your signature, but now you can also have a picture of yourself on the card.  Credit card companies that offer this new line of security are also making it free so you do not have to worry about adding any extra charge when it comes to getting one.  If you already have a credit card and would like to turn it into a credit card with a picture ID, if your credit card company make the offer, you can easily have it transformed into one.  By either walking in to the company’s banking center or sending in a photograph and a special mail-in form, you can get it changed.  And don’t worry about the mail-in form.  Not just anyone can use it to transform your card into a photo ID of his or herself; the form requests your Social Security Number in order to verify that it is indeed you.  Unless the thief has somehow managed to get that information as well, you are okay.

Picture ID credit cards also come in handy not just when making purchases, but if you need an extra form of identification.  Of course, not all locations will accept a photo ID credit card as a form of identification, but many will, which might come in handy if you are in a position where you don’t have any other form of ID.

It is possible that eventually picture ID credit cards will become the norm until thieves come up with a way to get past that particular blocking mechanism.  However, credit card companies are getting more and more in tune with how to keep their customers safe, and by the time thieves are up to speed, they could easily have come up with yet another new form of protection.

As of yet, not all credit card companies offer the photo option with their cards.  There are a great many of them to cover, but credit card companies move with great speed when it comes to new ideas and making changes. Even if your credit card does not yet have the photo ID option, do not be surprised if you eventually receive a letter in the mail with your next bill that announces the implementation of their new picture ID opportunity.  An extra little bit of security can give you a lot more peace of mind.
