Do You Prefer to Prepay?
While credit may be king, there are those of us who prefer to prepay. For some of us, it may be a tool for keeping to our monthly budget. For some of us, it may be our only option, due to either a bad credit history or lack of credit history. Some of may simply feel safer knowing that we don’t run the risk of falling easily into debt each month. No matter why you decide to use a prepaid credit card, there are definite advantages.
The truth is that no matter how determined you maybe to try to stick with a set budget, it is very difficult to keep a record of exactly how much money you spend on certain items during the course of any given month. It may sometimes seem as if your money has simply disappeared, and even the best of budgets can quickly be left far behind. It is even harder to predict how much you will spend in the coming month, but there is a way to place a limit on what you will spend.
If you prepay a certain amount on a credit card each month, you can choose to use that card and only that card for certain purchases. For most of us, there are some monthly costs, such as set mortgages, basic phone or electric charges, that we can predict to a fairly accurate amount. However, there are other purchases, such as food or personal items, that we may be likely to find ourselves spending more on than we plan to. If you use a prepaid credit card specifically for such expenses, the very fact that the card has been prepaid will impose a limit on your monthly spending. This is a great way to either take control of your budget or simply train yourself into better spending habits. Every time you use your prepaid card, you will know exactly how much you have left to spend for the month because you can check the remaining balance.
If you are trying to improve or establish your credit, then a prepaid credit card may be your only option. Most banks are willing to give a prepaid credit card even to a person who is deemed a high credit risk, because of the fact that the money they will spend is not actually a loan. While these cards won’t improve your credit score as much as a traditional credit card, they will be reported on your credit history, and so if you are able to avoid overspending and establish a good payment history, you may eventually earn enough credit trust to be granted a more traditional credit card. In the meantime, you will have the convenience and flexibility of using a credit card.
Another good reason to have a prepaid card is for emergency situations. If something ever comes up that you need to pay for but don’t have the money in your checking account to cover, having a prepaid card that is reserved for difficult times can be a great help, especially if you don’t have a regular credit card.
While a prepaid credit card might not be everyone’s favorite choice, it’s always great to know that you have options.
